Anna Maria Pigato
Anna Maria Pigato was born in San Martino di Venezze (RO) in 1959. Few years later she moved to Nove with her family. Nove, a small town set on the river Brenta, is known all over the world for her over four centuries-old ceramics tradition: within a 8 km 2 area there is a large number of smaller or bigger industries, that during the 60's had an incredible development. When she was 14 years-old she began to work in a factory of the town and she learnt some traditional ceramics techniques as the "traditional flowers" one and the "spaghetto" one, which she tried to personalize and develop year after year. Later, after many other work experiences, she decided to concentrate her work on the main tradition of Nove, the art of "cuchi". The typical whistles of Nove are called "cuchi". They are interely "terracotta" handly made and baked in special stoves. They often represent animal shapes, in particular birds, cocks and owls. In folk custom they were usually bought at local festival and gave to the lover as a symbol of first courting. Anna Maria's first creation was the owl, a good luck symbol that in some part of Italy is often set on the fireplace. Main characters of Anna Maria Pigato' magic world are of course cats, her beloved pets, then elephants, horses, tartles, fishes, whales, gooses, frogs, cocks and pigs. Each of them has a personal "background" and should be seen at the same time as a result of a research and a new starting point. She took part in several ceramics competitions and art exhibitions, for example in Asolo (Tv), Cesuna (Vi), Marostica (Vi), Bassano del Grappa (Vi), and Montigny (FRANCE): in 2004 she placed within the top ten best works at the" International Competition of Cuchi" in Asolo. Since 2004 she spends the whole summer in a big camping at the seaside, where she started a unique pottery workshop: children and adults can relax themselves and have fun painting a lot of objects. Anna Maria Pigato lives and works in Nove with her family and three wonderful cats, in via Martini 154 (VICENZA-ITALY). |
